Democratic strategist James Carville urged Democrats to prioritize bringing back Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national deported to El Salvador’s CECOT prison, calling it a “top agenda” item. “This we should fight on. You can’t pivot to an economic issue,” Carville said on his “Politics War Room” podcast, referencing the Holocaust poem “First They Came.”
Abrego Garcia, arrested by ICE in March and deported despite a 2019 court order shielding him from removal, is allegedly linked to MS-13, a claim his attorneys dispute. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) traveled to El Salvador to negotiate his release, but was denied access to the prison.
Meanwhile, Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) called for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, citing the administration’s defiance of a Supreme Court order to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return. “I’ve seen enough,” Thanedar posted on X. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg found probable cause to hold the administration in contempt.
